Abstract
Volume phase holograms of high diffraction efficiency have been produced using the Polaroid photopolymer medium, DMP-128. The modulation of the index of refraction that forms the phase grating is due to variations of the mass indensity according to the Lorentz-Lorenz relation. A model is presented for the formation of the grating, based on polymerization and diffusion of monomer during exposure, as well as percolation effects in development. Just as in silver-halide materials, the time-dependent processes in image formation may be used to characterize a holographic reciprocity failure. In situ real-time measurements of grating information are used to detemine the reaction rates.
