Abstract

The critical duration t_c is the maximum stimulus duration which the visual system can linearly integrate. In the classic literature on temporal integration in the visual system, t_c varies at most by a factor of 3 between dark-adapted and fully light-adapted conditions. Little attention has been given to pure cone-mediated temporal summation or to the role of probability summation in the variation of t_c with luminance.
