Abstract
The critical duration tc is the maximum stimulus duration which the visual system can linearly integrate. In the classic literature on temporal integration in the visual system, tc varies at most by a factor of 3 between dark-adapted and fully light-adapted conditions. Little attention has been given to pure cone-mediated temporal summation or to the role of probability summation in the variation of tc with luminance.
