Abstract
The normalized equations describing transient stimulated Raman scattering are1,2where A1and A2represent the pump and Stokes waves, Xis the material excitation, ϵis its damping rate, and χ and τare normalized distance and time. One readily finds that K(τ)=|A1(χ, τ)|2+ |A2(χ, τ)|2is constant for all χ. If, in addition, is finite, implying that K(τ) → 0 as |τ|→∞, it can be shown that X(χ, τ) →0 everywhere in τas χ → ∞. Solitonlike structures which move in τwith respect to the pulse cannot persist. Ultimately, the structure must reach the back or forward end of the pulse and disappear. Structures which are stationary with respect to the pulse cannot persist either since X→ 0. Hence solitonlike and breatherlike structures cannot persist at all.
