Abstract
The absolute values of the thermal grating portion of a polarization spectroscopy signal of acetone solutions of malachite green and 1,3′-diethyl 1-2, 2 quinolythiacarbocyanine iodide (DQCI) are measured. Good agreement is obtained with the values calculated from a macroscopic description of the thermal modulation of the refractive index using a thermal susceptibility formalism. A method for measuring the resonant third-order electronic susceptibility of the dyes comparing the relative magnitude of the thermal and electronic portions of the polarization spectroscopy signal is proposed.
