Abstract

We have carried out a detailed investigation of squeezing and antibunching in the Jaynes-Cummings model, thereby extending the earlier work of Meystre and Zubairy.1 Analytic criteria are formulated relating the initial states of atom and field to the tendency of the field to undergo squeezing or antibunching when the atom enters the cavity. Guided by these criteria, we explore the generation of nonclassical states of the cavity field. Although we observe some peculiar effects, the magnitude of both squeezing and antibunching appears rather limited. An explanation is developed of why this is the case. The relationship of our work to other recent work in this area is discussed.
