Single-mode conversion by magnetic linear birefringence four-layer magnetooptic waveguides

Abstract

The propagation modes in a four-layer magnetooptic waveguide have been calculated, assuming that both the intermediate layers are anisotropic, as a function of the permeability and permittivity tensors of the material. Mode conversion for a plane magnetooptic waveguide consisting of a double-layer thin-film epitaxially grown on a substrate and placed in the air, where the active element corresponds to the top layer, has been analyzed. This structure makes it possible to obtain single-mode propagation which is of great importance in the making of optical devices.
