Abstract
Alexandrite for tunable lasers has been studied using optical and chemical techniques, including UV-visible spectroscopy, x-ray and electron microprobe, and chemical analysis. Material characteristics affect and limit laser performance and contribute to failure. Optical microscopy and SEM have been used to examine defects and banding. Bands are one of the most readily apparent characteristics of Czochralski-grown synthetic alexandrite. Through secondary electron image and x-ray profile (digital) data, the bands can be shown to be variations in the local doping level. The bands result from slight variations in the growth conditions, temperature drift being the most likely culprit. Defects which may induce failure in the laser rods have also been investigated. Laser damage sites are presented.
