Abstract

In 1983, Silfvast et al.1 demonstrated a high gain of 4416-Å cadmium II laser pumped by inner-shell photoionization. We propose an 1850-Å laser on the isoelectronic 4d95s22D5/24d105s5p2P3/2 transition in indium III. Our atomic structure calculations indicate near-equal line strengths for the CD II 4416-Å and in in 1850-Å transitions. Our calculated natural lifetime of 80 ns for the In III 4d95s2 2D5/2 state makes an inner-shell photoionization-pumped laser seem feasible.
