Abstract

The change in the gain of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) during degradation is clarified experimentally. The gain change becomes small under high carrier injection conditions. The gain decrease is estimated to be only 5 % under 105 hours of operation, which indicates that the SOA offers high reliability and the feasibility for use as a high-power light source.
