Abstract

The present state of the art of packaged semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) is reviewed. The fiber-to-fiber gain exceeding 20-dB has been demonstrated with satisfying the polarization sensitivity of less than 1 dB. The device structures for polarization insensitive operation, and packaging issues including optical coupling technology are discussed.
