Abstract

In order to achieve the substantial increases in capacity needed for future optical storage applications, a compact blue light source is essential. One of the most promising candidates for such a source is the frequency doubled infrared laser diode which utilizes a segmented KTP waveguide.1) As we have reported previously, this waveguide consists of an initial section designed for quasi phase matched SHG of the laser diode followed by a Bragg reflection section which is used to lock the laser diode to the wavelength needed for SHG.2) Such a waveguide was lens coupled to an AR coated laser diode to produce 1.6 mW at 425 nm. However, in order to use such a laser for high density optical disc storage systems, higher power and smaller size are strongly desired.
