Abstract
It has recently been shown that single mode Raman lasers are reducible to a simple mathematical description [1] similar to that of the detuned Haken-Lorenz model but for which operating conditions are considerably relaxed. As such they provide excellent opportunity for quantitative tests of nonlinear dynamics. In particular instabilities prevalent close to optimum conditions for lasing, are accompanied by bistable features and exhibit period doubling routes to chaos. These findings are in accord with earlier experimental findings [2].
