Abstract
A short-cavity dye laser has been constructed to study cw fluctuations. The cavity is short enough so that the population and field time scales are similar. We obtain different values for the correlation dimension and entropy from the time evolution of the total intensity and individual modes. In both cases the dimension and entropy increase with excess above lasing threshold. Moreover, semi-regular oscillations of the total intensity have been observed to occur in short bursts separating intervals of nearly constant cw laser output.
