Abstract

The electroretinogram (ERG) is a very valuable noninvasive tool in the diagnosis of retinal diseases and a sensitive measure of retinal function. Analysis of the various components provides important information about the functioning of different retinal neurons (reviews: Brown, 1968; Ikeda, 1987; Steinberg et al., 1991). The leading edge of the dark-adapted rod a-wave is known to be associated with rod photoreceptor activity (Granit, 1933, 1947; Brown, 1968; Penn and Hagins, 1969; Heynen and van Norren, 1985).
