Abstract
Image Understanding is rapidly becoming one of the most important components of image processing research; it is already the most important in terms of basic research dollars. Its goal is to transcend the limitations of conventional pattern recognition techniques by using additional information about the image formation process. We provide a brief overview and history of the field.
