Abstract

We report experimental and finite-difference time-domain simulation studies on terahertz (THz) characteristics of band gaps by using metal slits and grooves which are located inside the parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG). The non-Bragg and Bragg stop bands obtained from the slits embedded between the two surfaces of the PPWG can be used as notch filters and low-pass filters (LPFs). Also, the vertically localized standing-wave cavity mode (SWCM) between the upper waveguide surface and groove bottom, and the horizontally localized SWCM between two groove side walls (groove cavity) are well observed.
