Abstract
Recently, there has been considerable interest in photonic band gap materials[1]. We discuss a two dimensional (2-D) photonic band gap glass having hexagonal symmetry. Two dimensional materials display photonic band gaps in only one plane but are more easily fabricated than 3-D structures and yet have a number of potentially important optical applications. For example, they can be configured as high Q optical cavities for microlaser sources, as narrow band transmission/rejection filters, as low noise optical amplifiers or used in optical limiters.
