Abstract

The history of solitons dates back to an observation by J. Scott Russell in 1838. The first observation was followed by extensive mathematical developments culminating in new mathematical methods of analysis. The existence of optical solitons on optical fibers was first predicted by A. Hasegawa and demonstrated by the elegant experiments of L. F. Mol- lenauer. The amplification of solitions by erbium doped fiber amplifiers, first published by M. Nakazawa, made imminent their practical use.
