Abstract

In a conventional laser oscillation is obtained at frequencies for which the cavity provides positive feedback. Constructive interference leads to the formation of a spectrum consisting of discrete modes. If a frequency shifting element is inserted into the feedback path the radiation shows a continuous inherently broadband power spectrum.
