Strong Optical Nonlinearity in Poled Polymers Due to Asymmetric Charge Injection

Abstract

Poled polymer films, containing hyper-polarizable organic dye molecules, have been widely studied in recent years as a means for producing strong second order optical nonlinearity. The poling process, in which an electric field is applied to the polymer at elevated temperature, imparts a bulk non-isotopic arrangement to the dye species. Thus, these films can be used for optical second harmonic generation and electro-optic modulation.
