Baseband Tuning of CO2 Lasers from 0 to 5 GHz

Abstract

Very efficient broadband (5 to 20 GHz) and continuous tuning of CO2 lasers frequency have been achieved[1] by using a 20 microns thick GaAs thin-slab waveguide modulator cladded with 2 microns thick CdTe buffer layers. This was achieved by synchronizing the infrared laser beam with a traveling-wave microwave in the infrared waveguide in which a broadband microstrip transmission line has been incorporated. However, the integrated imcorstripline infrared waveguide modulator is inadequate to cover the frequency tuning range from 0 to 5 GHz in which an efficient electrooptic modulator is very desirable for applications such as Doppler tracking, sounding, and spectroscopy.
