Abstract

A novel nanochannel glass structure consisting of a two dimensional array of glass capillaries with well controlled diameters as small as a few 10’s of nanometers has been developed. The capillaries may be arranged in a variety of configurations ranging from simple arrays to highly complex structures. Semiconductor materials, such as the II–VI and III–V groups with large effective exciton Bohr radii (ab ≥ 100Å ), can be deposited in small diameter channels of variable length. The spatial confinement of these materials clearly falls into the regime of quantum wires and dots. Advanced architectures can be constructed on a mesoscopic scale by connecting capillaries or arranging the capillaries in a pixel array.
