Abstract

It has been proposed [1] that dielectric structures with a periodic index of refraction could give rise to photonic band gaps for which propagation of electromagnetic waves would be for bidden in the structure. The interest has been focused on finding three-dimensionally periodic-structures that would generate such band gaps[2,3]. However, an increasing interest in integrated optics, surface emitting lasers and two-dimensional transmission lines has prompted research on two-dimensionally periodic structures [4-6]. In this paper, we examine two structures; the first one consisting of long parallel dielectric rods of square cross section located at the comers of a square, the other consisting of long dielectric rods of circular cross section located at the comers and center of a regular hexagon. The refraction index of the rods may be greater or less than that of the background.
