Abstract
An optical switch receives an optical signal and either transmits the signal (’on’ state) or prevents the transmission of the signal (’off’ state). An all-optical switch is itself controlled by an optical field.[1] We show that even the ideal all-optical switch is limited by the quantized nature of the electromagnetic field.
