Very Early Time Brownian Motion Observed by Multiply Scattered Speckle Field Interferometry

Abstract

The translational motion of a particle in a fluid is a problem with spectacular historical roots[1] that has continued to receive substantial theoretical attentation during the last twenty five years.[2] Recently it has been realized that it is possible to probe particle motions on length scales less than 5 A using newly developed multiple light scattering spectroscopies.[3] This thousand fold increase in resolution offers us a possiblity to study translational motion in a new physical regime where the hydrodynamic degrees of freedom of the surrounding fluid play an important role.
