Competition between multiphoton ionization and multiphoton dissociation in diatomic molecules

Abstract

Competition between dissociation and ionization channels is fundamental to the decay dynamics in highly excited diatomic systems. Competition not only affects energy partitioning between neutral and ionic fragments, it can influence ionization branching ratios significantly as well.1 At high field strengths, nonlinear fragmentation channels are open via multiphoton transitions. As a result, both spontaneous and induced competition between ionization and dissociation channels must be considered.
