Abstract

We present measurements of nearly degenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) spectra vs dopant density and incident light intensity in Nd3+;β” Na alumina, Our results establish the mechanism of weak nonradiative decay in this material and reveal that relaxation of the Nd ground state at high concentration evolves separately from the excited state because of the onset of Nd-Nd pair processes. That is, at a Nd density of ~6 × 1020 cm−3, this system evolves from a closed to an open quantum system.
