Ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy of coherently vibrating crystals and molecules

Abstract

It has recently become possible to carry out time-resolved observations of coherent vibrational motion in many types of medium through impulsive stimulated scattering (ISS). Transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons can be coherently excited and probed with picosecond pulses in impulsive stimulated Brillouin scattering (ISBS),1 while coherent optic phonons and low-frequency molecular vibrations can be generated and monitored with femtosecond pulses in impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS).2
