Abstract
Rockley and Waugh1 have demonstrated a method using the wavelength dependence of cw optoacoustic signals to determine fluorescence yields without a known calibration compound. We exploit their idea to measure nonradiative yields for submonolayer coverages of adsorbates on single-crystal sapphire following optical excitation. Since there are no standards in such an environment and there are very few adsorbates, this measurement would be difficult by conventional means.
