Abstract
Previously, we demonstrated all-optical switching in GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum-well (MQW) nonlinear directional couplers (NLDCs) using 10-ps pulses1 for which the origin of the nonlinearities was due to photoexcited real carriers. Recently, we have improved the fabrication of the NLDC, resulting in better reproducibility and switching contrast when picosecond pulses are used (see Fig. 1). We have also observed subpicosecond all-optical modulation in a GaAs/AlGaAs NLDC using femtosecond pulses. The origin of such ultrafast modulation is attributed to the optical Stark effect.2
