Abstract
We report a combination of an acousto-optic TM-TE mode converter using a acoustic channel guide1 and a double-mode segment, passive TM-TE polarization splitter2 on the same X-cut LiNbO3 substrate (see Fig. 1). This new integrated-optical circuit represents a low-power, acoustically tunable, narrow bandwidth (de-)multiplexer (wavelength filter) of adjustable coupling strength (transmission) designed for a wavelength range near λ = 1.5 μm. Simultaneously, it is the basic structure for the design of a polarization-independent device (with two such structures combined) and of even more complicated integrated-optical circuits like polarization-dependent and polarization-independent wavelength switching matrices.
