Semiconductor Laser to Integrated Optics Coupling Using Transition Waveguides

Abstract

The geometric mismatch between double heterostructure lasers and single mode fibers or integrated optics guides causes considerable coupling loss. The laser active area is typically 1x2μm whereas fiber or integrated optics guides are about 3μm in diameter. A butt joint without lenses or other improvements can couple only a few percent of the laser output into the wave guide. The transition waveguides described here have the potential of improving this coupling efficiency to 50% or more.
