Head-Mounted Displays for Virtual Environments: The Optical Interface

Abstract

Head-mounted display (HMD) systems are becoming more and more popular tools Tor scientific visualization across many disciplines. This paper focuses on the optical interface to virtual worlds. Three generic types of optical viewers are described, as well as a head-tracking optical device with scalable work area. Current state of the art is discussed, and the HMD of the future presented.
