Abstract
Properly applying binary optical elements (BOEs) in a lens system requires that the designer fully understand the features and limitations of these devices. Already in existence are a number of conventional lens designs which have been refitted with BOEs to achieve reduced number of elements, reduced weight, or greatly improved performance.[1,2] To illustrate the use of diffractive elements in an imaging system, a classic Schmidt camera is fitted with a binary optic correction plate. Use of this well-known design should serve to highlight features of the BOE and suggest future applications for this technology.
