Abstract

Presently there is great interest in lightwave networks based upon wavelength division multiplexing techniques. Such systems, as well other applications such as noise filters for optical amplifiers, will require compact, possibly tunable wavelength filter devices. In addition, further benefits may result if these devices could be monolithically integrated with photodetectors or optical amplifiers. Toward that goal we have demonstrated, for the first time, a wavelength selective coupler based upon forward coupling between nonidentical, vertically stacked InGaAsP waveguides on InP using an etched corrugated layer for phase matching. We have achieved a bandpass filter response with a 3 dB bandwidth (full width at half maximum) of 65Å with an interaction length of only 1.0 mm using a grating period of 14.4 μm.
