Abstract

Semiconductor lasers emitting near 1.3μm and 1.55μm and fabricated using the InGaAsP material system are widely used as sources in fiber optic transmission systems. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) where light at different wavelengths are simultaneously encoded and propagated through the fiber is generally used to increase the capacity of existing fiber optic routes. Most WDM systems currently in operation use two separate laser chips as sources and use a multiplexer to combine the two outputs to a single fiber. This paper describes the fabrication and performance characteristic of a dual wavelength (1.3μm and 1.55μm) laser fabricated on the same chip.
