Abstract

Recently, much research has been performed on III-V semiconductor optical waveguides for application in optical monolithic integration. To realize effective monolithic integration of waveguides with active devices, such as lasers and modulators, the waveguides must be single mode, and the cross-sectional dimensions must be reduced. Therefore, strip-loaded miniature waveguides with strong optical confinement are very appropriate for this purpose. We have already reported a low-loss strip-loaded single-mode waveguide with a GaAs/AlGaAs double heterostructure1). This study describes bend losses in GaAs/AlGaAs miniature single-mode waveguides.
