Abstract
As the use of single-mode fibers now successfully extends beyond the standard long-haul high-data-rate links due to the large interest in coherent transmission and the serious prospects of local area networks, there is an increasing need to develop improved or new guided-wave devices capable of launching, processing, and receiving optical signals. To satisfy the requirements of the expected applications, it is possible to consider discrete components based on semiconductor and dielectric waveguides in a hybrid form. But for obvious reasons, the natural tendency is to study monolithic integration of circuits.
