Abstract

Over the past flow years Feit and Fleck [1] - [ 5] have used the Beam Propagation Method (BPM) very succesfully for computing the modal properties of multimode graded index fibers. Before discussing the application of the BPM to integrated optics, it is necessary to understand the basic principles and limitations of the method.
