Abstract

It has been shown that Yb3+ ions in crystalline hosts can exhibit optical transitions involving pairs of ions, either two Yb3+ ions1 or Yb3+ paired with another rare earth, such as Gd3+, 2 or upconversion processes involving a number of Yb3+ ions.3 We have studied such transitions in CaF2:Yb using tunable laser spectroscopy.
