Lasing from A Vibrational Transition of a Molecular Defect

Abstract

Infrared fluorescence from CN defects in alkali halides was first observed by Yang and Luty1. Recently, we have observed lasing in the KBr:CN system. This is the first report of a laser operating between pure vibrational levels of a defect in a solid. While CN will fluoresce at high temperatures, (up to 500 K), lasing is only observed at temperatures below 4 K. This is due to the nature of the pumping.
