Abstract
The modern era of gradient-index optics began in the late 1960's. During the last fifteen years, approximately 150 papers have been published on the topic. However, with all the new technology, we may have lost sight of interesting optical problems that were investigated before 1900. The subject of gradient-index optics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries will be discussed.
