Abstract
Nonlinear spectroscopy of atomic systems can involve either resonant or nonresonant intermediate states. Resonant multiphoton spectroscopy can be thought of as a two step process wherein the atom is first prepared in the excited state and then probed in that state. In this talk we will discuss both processes and the prospects for doing multiphoton spectroscopy using the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) free electron laser (FEL).
