Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) in Optical Networks: Does Raman Scattering spoil things for Integration?

Abstract

The integration of QKD in telecom networks forces quantum systems to be more tolerant to in-band noise photons, when the quantum channel is wavelength multiplexed to classical signals over the same optical fibre. Some coexistence schemes, e.g. proposed in [1], would require the matched operation of telecom equipment regarding wavelength and launched power. The considerations presented here assume no limitations on wavelength and launched power and are motivated by our entanglement based QKD-system, but are also applicable to other QKD-systems and commercial telecom infrastructures.
