Abstract
The success of Cr4+-doped oxide crystals as tunable laser sources in the near infrared spectral region has raised considerable interest in the spectroscopic properties of ions with d2 electron configuration. In this paper, results of spectroscopic investigations of V3+ are presented and compared to previuosly published results of Cr4+.1. A special focus of interest is laid on the wurtzite-type compounds LiAlO2 and LiGaO2 as these crystals exhibit tetrahedrally coordinated lattice sites only.
