Coherent zone-folded acoustic phonons in GaAs/AlAs superlattices

Abstract

Due to the artificial periodictiy along the growth direction of a superlattice, the bulk acoustic dispersion is folded into the mini Brillouinzone. The zone-folding allows the direct interaction of acoustic modes with light. In femtosecond resonant excitation of superlattices the coherent generation of first order backfolded acoustic modes has been observed [1].
