Abstract
Advances in controlling the motion of neutral particles include the development of atomic mirrors based on evanescent waves on the surface of a dielectric. With a blue-detuned field, an atom will be reflected from the evanescent wave by repulsive dipole forces. Such components for atom optics arc important in developing cavities and traps for cold atoms and for atomic interferometry.
