Abstract

We study the scattering of light by an ultra cold trapped atom in the ground state of the atomic trap. We present the quantum mechanical expression for the scattering cross section. We pay special attention to the semiclassical analysis of the process and show that the major characterics of the scattering may be deduced from conservation of energy and momentum in the process of absorption and emission of photons.
