Abstract
Optical pulse compression has become a well established method for generating ultrashort pulses. So far compressed pulses with low energy (nanojoule) have been obtained by using self-phase modulation in single-mode optical fibers and subsequent chirp compensation into suitable phase dispersive elements. In this way pulses as short as 6 fs have been obtained [1]. The recent availability of femtosecond pulses of high energy (millijoule) from solid state lasers calls for new pulse spectral broadening techniques
