Abstract

The generation of visible light in singlemode fibers, particularly second-harmonic (SH) light of visible and infrared lasers, is quite efficient. However, there are intriguing questions about the process that leads to this SH generation process. In the case of third harmonic generation, just recently efficient generation without fiber preparation was observed in a circular core GeO2-doped silica fiber.1 In this work we report on the experimental study of third-harmonic generation in circular core Er+3-GeO2-doped silica fibers, pumped by 1.319 µm, Q-switched, and mode-locked Nd:YAG laser pulses. This laser light was injected into 0.4 m of Er+3-GeO2-doped fiber and into a same length of undoped fiber with the same parameters and GeO2 content, for comparison with the doped case.
